Fragrance note guide

Whether you like the smell of a perfume should not be decided after the first impression. Because all perfumes gradually change their scent and smell completely different after a while, so the first impression can be deceiving. Why this happens? The reason is the presence of fragrance essences, which can be divided into three categories (head, heart and base). These are released gradually, not all at once.

Headnote (high tones)

The head scent is responsible for the first impression. Based on this, we decide whether we like the smell or not. The composition of the head scent is very intense, but this intensity fades in a few minutes or seconds. The head scent is most often represented by fresh and light scents that are mostly found in spring and summer fragrances. These fragrances are characterized by freshness and lightness.

Scent of the heart (mid tones)

As soon as the head scent disappears after a few minutes, the heart scent appears, which contains volatile substances. Much more intense scents than head scents. The heart scent can usually be felt for 2-3 hours. The middle tones define the character of the perfume, which supports the intensity of the perfume, together with the aromatic essences form the basis of the perfume. The most common components of heart fragrance are floral scents (rose, jasmine).

Basic (low tones)

Finally comes the base scent. It contains slow substances that can be felt for about 4 hours. In some perfumes, the intensity lasts longer, so the scent can be felt throughout the day. The base scent is most often represented by soft, woody, cypress, or oriental accords, such as vanilla or incense. It is combined with other exotic and floral scents.

Type of scents

We are usually used to dividing fragrances into sweet and fresh, but the division of fragrances is complicated and very extensive. Everyone perceives scents differently, depending on how we relate to the scent and the particular ingredient.

Ambros (Eastern)

The fragrance typical of the Middle East, Eastern Mediterranean and the Orient. The dominant ingredients are amber, exotic (sandalwood) cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, patchouli and incense, often accompanied by exotic flowers and spices. A typical amber combination gives depth and an oriental effect to all the components of the perfume. Amber highlights the other components of the perfume and makes it last longer.

Cyprus

In 1917, the well-known perfumer Francois Coty introduced the revolutionary Chypre women's perfume, laying the foundations of a new fragrance family. Chypre perfumes are elegant and sophisticated. The flaky fragrance is composed of Mediterranean ingredients and inspired by the plants of the island of Cyprus (citrus (bergamot), oakmoss, vetiver and patchouli). These fragrances have fruity, floral, fresh and green variants. Men's fluffy concept - unlike the female fluffy concept, it is complemented by wooden and leather decorations. It is divided into woody, yeasty, fresh and citrus versions.

Fouger (fern)

Fougère means "fern", but the group has nothing to do with the fern itself, which is practically odorless. The fouger concept is based on the Houbignant - Fougére Royale perfume from 1882, the main ingredients of which are fern, oak, lavender and coumarin. In the modern fragrance of Fougère, you will also smell lavender, vetiver, geranium and bergamot, as well as sage, rosemary and other green herbs in the top notes. For extra depth, some woods are added to these fragrances, such as sandalwood or guaiac wood or leather. Fouger perfumes contain almost exclusively men's fragrances.

Powder

A wide selection of natural and synthetic tones gives a "powder effect" to the perfume composition. The most common powder tones are iris (iris / orris), violet, vanilla, rose, musk, heliotrope, opoponax resins and some amber resins. Powder perfumes are considered the perfect harmony of elegance and femininity. They can be divided into two categories: ,,face powder or "talcum powder".The first category includes those scents that are less sweet and resemble a woman's boudoir or the smell of skin after powdering

Water (sea)

Water fragrances are particularly fresh and suitable for the warm summer months. The elements of the sea and water appear in the composition of water fragrances, which contain the salinity of seawater or evoke the scent of a waterfall or summer rain. These are mostly synthetic essences, because sea water, a breath of cold air, the smell of rain, and an ice cube cannot be produced any other way than molecularly. Most water fragrances (except the freshness base) contain fruits, herbs or flowers. Examples include the scent of melon, cucumber, lotus or water lily.

Green

Green scents mainly contain plant scents, the aroma of freshly cut grass, herbaceous herbs, ferns or leaves. They are used to soften sweeter floral scents. Green chords are light and unobtrusive.

Musk

Musk perfumes are based on musk (musk, English musk). This distinctly fragrant substance has been used in medicine, cosmetics and the world of fragrances for centuries. Musk perfumes are popular for their pleasant scent and intensity. Musk gives softness and sensuality to fragrant compositions. Musk is added to fragrances mainly because of its softness and fixing properties, so the fragrance lasts longer on the skin. The scent of musk is slightly sweet, from powdery to creamy.

Wood

Designation of aromatic tones derived from woody materials, trees (cedar, chypre, beech, mahogany ..) and shrubs (e.g. patchouli) or grasses (e.g. vetiver) and wood-like synthetic molecules (akigala wood, ambroxan, cashmere) . Woody tones add richness and warmth to any fragrance.

Balsamic

Resins and balms form the basis of mainly oriental perfumes. They are solid, oily or liquid. Major ingredients include benzoin, labdanum, olibanum (frankincense), galbanum, myrrh, opoponax, elemi, toluene, and balsam of Peru. With the exception of galbana, resin forms the base notes of the perfume.

Aldehydesaldehydove

Perfumes containing aldehydes (aldehyde is a type of alcohol) have been known since 1920. These fragrances were first used in France. Their pioneer is probably the most famous perfume in the world, Channel 5. Aldehyde perfumes usually enhance the fragrance in the head of the perfume and give it a kind of sparkle. It looks very refined and pleasant.

Spicy

There are many spices from different sources: seeds, fruits, bark, roots, leaves and flowers. They can be fresh or warm, sour or sweet. The most commonly used warming spices in the perfumery industry include cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper and cloves. They have a strong aroma and last a long time. Among the so-called cold spices, we find aromatic and more vegetative tones, which evaporate faster. This mainly includes ginger, coriander or juniper berries, spicy scents are associated with oriental and woody scents or fern accords.

Citruscitrusy

The common characteristic of citrus fragrances is a quick onset and a short duration. It is used for both women's and men's or unisex perfumes. Most often you will smell orange, tangerine, bergamot, petitgrain or grapefruit. Due to their lightness, they are ideal for everyday wear. If you want your fresh feeling to last longer, look for a perfume with woody or patchouli tones. The sweet scent goes well with the citrusy freshness. Adds caramel or musk perfume.

Ozone-rich

Ozone fragrances contain Calone - a molecule invented by Pfizer in 1966. Calone lends a watery feel to compositions and has a sweet cucumber scent. Watermelon is combined with fruit, fairy rose or lotus with flower, and sea water and beach are obtained with herbs and grass. It can also be found under the name "watermelon ketone". Other molecules that boast names like Greek goddesses: Floraozone, Azurone, Ultrazur... are added to Calon to enhance the impression of its freshness and shine. Ozone tones are synonymous with freshness in washed underwear.

Earthzemite

Earthly scents include wood, soil, grass, herbs, moss, fresh air, river water, etc. can be cited. In fact, this category is so broad that it is only used as a catch-all term.

Aromaaromaticke

Aromatic tones are usually combined with rosemary, sage, cumin, lavender and other herbs that have a very intense grassy spicy aroma. It is often combined with citrus fruits and spicy tones. Aromatic compositions are especially characteristic of men's fragrances.

Lactone (dairy product)mlecné

Lactones are cyclic esters that link an alcohol group and a carboxyl group in the same molecule. The most commonly used lactones are peach lactone, which has milky peach or milk lactone at the base.

Tropicaltropicke

Smell of sweet, fresh tropical fruits: coconut, pineapple, guava, papaya, mango, passion fruit, etc.
